The Sandwich Generation

Caring for your parents and your children at the same time — and finding room for yourself in the middle.

You are raising your children. You are also caring for your aging parents. Some days it feels like everyone needs you at the exact same time. Most days, they actually do.

Your parent needs help making sense of a medical bill or someone to sit with them to ensure they’re eating. Your young child or teen needs help navigating their own life, a ride, and a parent who is mentally present, not just physically in the room. Your career demands your attention. If you have a partner, that relationship needs tending too—and it is often the first thing to get squeezed out. Somewhere in the middle of all of that is you: stretched thin, exhausted, and feeling guilty in every direction.

In many families, caring for elders is an unspoken, absolute expectation. You do it out of deep love and respect, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t profoundly heavy. People in this stage often tell me they feel like they are failing everyone. They lose patience with their kids, then feel awful. They feel flashes of resentment toward a parent they love, then feel crushing guilt.

There is also another, quieter layer: caring for a parent often brings up the entire history between you. Old feelings can surface in the middle of an ordinary afternoon. You might be sitting in a doctor’s waiting room, hear your parent’s voice, and suddenly feel ten years old again—remembering what you needed as a child, what you received, and what you didn’t.

Therapy gives you one place that is entirely yours. A space where no one needs anything from you. Together, we can unpack what this stage of life is bringing up—the exhaustion, the grief, the guilt, and the old family patterns underneath it all. Taking care of yourself right now is not one more chore to add to your list. It is the only way you can keep going.
