Therapy for Young Adults

College or graduate school. Stay in the relationship or leave it. Move out, move back, move somewhere new. Why is dating so exhausting right now? “Are we ready to get married?” Everyone around you seems to be announcing their next step, and you may not be sure what yours is.

You can be doing everything “right” (working in a field you enjoy, having a good social circle) and still feel overwhelmed or behind. Much of the anxiety I hear from young adults lives in that gap: between where you are and where you think you should be by now.

What brings young adults in

The pressure of the “perfect” choice

Sometimes, the anxiety comes from carrying someone else’s timeline. You might be measuring your life with a ruler you didn’t choose — comparing where you are to family expectations, societal milestones, or what your peers are posting online.

But just as often, it comes from the weight of having to figure out your own path. When you have endless options in dating apps, career paths, and cities to live in, the urge to optimize every choice to find the “perfect” partner or the “perfect” job can wear you down. You might just be tired of feeling like you constantly have to measure your progress at all.

Therapy gives us room to look at what’s driving the indecision, so you can stop second-guessing yourself.

The ground is moving

Some of what you’re feeling is a reasonable response to real things. Dating has changed, and it can be harder to meet people even with more ways to connect than ever. Entry-level jobs are shifting, and the path that was supposed to be straightforward may not feel straightforward anymore. Therapy can’t fix the economy or change the dating pool, and I won’t pretend otherwise. What it can do is help you make decisions from something steadier than panic, and keep uncertainty from freezing you in place.

How therapy helps

I won’t hand you a five-year plan or dating advice, and nobody here needs you to have it figured out. We slow down the noise of everyone else’s timelines, the shifting job market, and the commentary in your own head, so you can hear what you actually think and want. Decisions tend to get clearer from there. Not always easier, but clearer, and more your own.

Questions people often ask

I’m in college or graduate school. Can I see you online?

Yes, as long as you’re physically in New York or New Jersey during our sessions, since those are the states I’m licensed in. If your school is in one of them, we can work together during the school year.

I’m on my parents’ insurance. Will they know?

If you use their plan, the policyholder may receive an explanation of benefits showing that a visit took place. If that matters to you, private pay is an option, and we can talk it through. The Insurance & Fees page explains how each option works.

What if I don’t even know what I’d talk about?

That’s common at this age, and it’s enough to start. Feeling anxious, stuck, or unsure of what’s next is reason enough. You don’t need a crisis or the right words.

Will you tell me what to do about my job, my major, or my relationship?

No. But I will help you sort through the fears, the "shoulds," and the practical realities behind your indecision, so the choice you make is yours.
